Genres of Gamification

Points systems used to be the main focus of games and players would compete against each other to get high scores in arcades. Since these early video games, the field of game design has branched out into a diverse set of genres and styles of gameplay. Yet the field of gamification is still stuck in this early stage of evolution where it has yet to branch out into separate genres.

The fundamental principle of gamification is that Games are inherently engaging mediums. The goal is engagement, so my thoughts on the Cycle of Engagement are relevant to this broader conceptualisation of gamification.
